CV Boots by Warren French 4/11/07
Hi Darren,

The joint itself was ok but the boot was just starting to show some
cracks so I needed to change it so I can get the vehicle registered - and
before and splits let the dirt in and grease out.

Here's how it's done.

The axle shafts do come off the car but it's comparatively easy - messy
but easy.
Wheel hubs off and away from the axle shaft.
Pull back rubber boot on inner CV joint.
Feel inside CV housing outer race on gearbox for spring wire clip running
in groove against the edge. Lift wire clip out with screwdriver and
fingers.
Pull axle shaft straight from vehicle.
Remove circlip from inner end of shaft and take off inner CV race.
Remove boot(s) from shaft.
Clean up old grease (the really messy bit)
Slide new boot for outer CV joint on from inner end and fill with the new
grease in the pack.
Put clamps on outer boot and tighten.
Slide small clamp for inner boot onto shaft.
Slide boot for inner CV joint onto shaft.
Replace inner race for inner CV joint and replace circlip.
Position boot correctly against its notch in the shaft and tighten clamp.
Fill boot with correct grease.
Place large clamp for the inner boot on the shaft
Hold back the boot and insert inner race into outer race on gearbox and
replace spring clip in groove.
Readjust boot over outer race and tighten clamp.
Use heaps of rags to try and get rid of all the old grease that fell out
when you moved/opened the boots.
Refit wheel hub to axle shaft.

Hope that helps someone else.

comment=Hi there i have a 1992 vp commodore and the gears decided they would
not change gears at the right time then i took it to go get fix he old me i
was up for a new gear box, but the day after it started working how it was
meant to but a week later it has started back up again, which to makes me
beleave its a pressure problem but im not sure please help

Cassandra,

If you go to your local Auto store explain the problem and then ask for
transmission treatment, this may improve the transmission and buy time.
Its such a scam that transmission repairers always say the same thing even
to me.
They say it requires a change over trans, which leads me to think that they
can't repair, just changeover or they are not interested in the customers
needs.
Not every customer can afford a changeover transmission
