Subject=Suspected leaking heater
comment=Hi,

I bought a VP commodore wagon about 2 months ago. Within a week some
cooling system problems became apparent, and upon flushing the system
and re-charging with coolant the problems became much worse. It would
run ok for about 10 minutes then as soon as I'd stop at lights the
temperature would rise suddenly. I took it to my very reliable mechanic
to get checked out and he replaced a couple of suspect hoses, tightened
everything up and it was all fine for about a week. yesterday while
driving home I got stuck behind an old biddy doing 40 in an 80 zone and
lo and behold, the temp shot up to about 3/4. I could smell a strong
smell of coolant coming from the vents when I turned the heater on full
blast to try and cool the engine down a little. I suspect either the
heater core may be leaking or may have a leaky hose somewhere under the
dash. It doesn't get we carpet or loose much coolant (about 1cm per week
from the overflow), but maybe the leak is enough just to lose that
little bit of pressure allowing for higher temperatures.

I was just wondering what the average cost for a repair such as this is,
and should I try a cheaper method first such as running a bottle of
Chemiweld through the system to try and plug the leak?

Fazz,

Ok this is a good question and if every question was presented like this it
would make it easier to answer.
Now you described that when travelling slow the temp goes up, this would
indicate the thermo fans may not be cutting in
When the vehicle is stationary as the temp is rising also should the fans
cut in
The fuse is under that black plastic cover on the left hand side in the
engine bay
Also you may have a slow reacting thermostat, this is hard to check so do
the following
Start your engine and allow it to run at normal operating temp, do not stand
over the engine as it may burn you if a hose
will split. Observe the thermo fans cutting in and count the seconds when
the fans stay on
If they stay on between 10 and 40 seconds then this is considered ok
If they stay on between 40 and 80 this means the fans are not able to
control the temp therefore you have a problem
A blocked or slow thermostat will show the upper and lower hoses at uneven
temperature
Chemiweld is the best product to buy time but it should only be used when
required

Let me know how you get on

Current mechanic cannot diagnose problem. Done tune up & service,
replaced fuel pump yet car has refused to start twice since. Starts after 15
minutes. Intermittent problem. Any idea what this could be?
Answer Hyundai-5-2 Car not starting
Kelli,

Its a common problem in ECU, I'm sorry for taking so long if you
need this repaired I'm based in Mordialloc
The thing to do is get all servicing done at your regular mechanic
and curly problems need dedicated curly techs that enjoy to
solve car maker problems
Feedback-5-2 Car not starting
Hi Darren,

Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately I got so fed up with the
Excel failing on me (I had a baby 5 weeks ago!), I sold it a couple of weeks
ago. I took it to another mechanic to try and solve the problem and he offered
to buy it from me at an agreed price. Ive never been so glad to see the back
of a car in my life! I will never EVER touch another Hyundai again in my
life! Since I bought it brand new in 1998 its had one problem after another
and most of the electrics like rear lights, dash lights, interior light,
headlights, ciggy lighter, fuel guage all failing at some point in time. They
must have dodgy electrics in them.
Thanks for replying anyway!! Much appreciated.
